So I have never owned a cat. In fact I’ve never really been around one. I’ve always been afraid of their claws too. Imagining that when they walk or kneed on you their claws jab into you like Wolverine.

When we had to give up my dog of six years I never thought that I would have a cat six months later. My husband really missed not having a pet in the house and I agreed it was lonely not having a greeter after work. We decided we would look into a pet. After going through pros and cons to all the typical pets: Bird- too messy, Rat- weird tail, fish- too quiet etc… The argument that I made of never being around a cat was over ridden by my husband who had and said it was the pet we needed. I knew a kitten would be beyond my ability so we settled on a year + age range.

I went with my 20 month old son to Happy Cat’s Haven a few times. I was introduced to a bunch of different cats and never felt a connection. I would leave feeling like even though I was committed to trying, I was sure I would never feel a real connection to a cat.

We woke up on Aug 22nd and my husband said “Babe, our cat is at the shelter . I know he’s there today.”

I laughed and said that I wanted a girl. My husband said that a boy was waiting for us and we were going to take him home today.

We went after our sons afternoon nap. He slept longer than usual and by the time we got to Happy Cats the doors were locked. We knocked and two wonderful ladies decided that we could see the cats as they closed down for the day. they brought us into a room with Mew. He’s buddies had both been adopted that day and he was alone. laying in a small rounded cat house on the floor.  The three of us came in and sat down and Mew came right out and stretched and wanted lots of nose to nose touches with my husband and I . My son gave him a few pets and Mew just purred and purred. He climbed up on a scratch post next to me and mewed. I pet him and he nuzzled my hand. I moved forward and his nose touched mine. I looked at my husband and he said, ” I told you he was here. We kind of have to get him today.”

Happy Cats sent us home with Mew and everything we needed for the first few days.

We struggled with a name for about 3 days and tried out a few of them. My son suggested Moose and Batman. My husband liked Augustus or Auggie and I finally came up with what we decided on… Bruce Wayne. Our Batman in a tuxedo. It just suited him completely. He even has the bat mask.

He stayed in my office for about 5 days. He explored and made himself comfortable and then was ready to head out into the rest of the house. We got a big cat condo for the front room and he thought that was really cool. He hangs out on the top pieces and watches the traffic and the birds and lounges in the sunlight.

He has been a great companion for my son who loves to greet him first thing in the morning yelling “Morning Brucey! MORNING!!”

My son reads to him and pretends to cook him food; he will bring the plastic food to him and Bruce will nuzzle it and my son will squeal with delight. I am very excited to watch their relationship grow. Bruce is so tolerant and doesn’t mind getting his tummy rubbed (in fact seems to really love it) He lays lovingly while my son rubs him and gives him love and kisses.

I too have been won over… I feel like I am his favorite. He come to me every time I sit down; kneads without his Wolverine abilities 😉 and nose touches and will hang out as long as he can. His paws and claws took some getting used to for me, but he is so gentle with me.  I never knew I would love a cat, and boy oh boy do I ever love this guy. My husband knew he was waiting for us that day. Now he protects our little home village from the cabinet tops at night…
